About Us

Big State Construction was founded by Gabriela Smith in 2017. Following Hurricane Harvey and after many years in the insurance industry, Gabriela understood the need to help Houston rebuild and made it her mission to make a difference. 

Gabriela has had the opportunity to make an impact in the community by engaging with corporate companies, business owners, and individuals. Among the many skills, she learned and developed to cultivate a secure network, multitask, and operate out of her comfort zone. Most importantly, she has the confidence and the right tools to be a business owner as a Construction and Real Estate Developer. Gabriela is an Experienced Chief Executive Officer with a demonstrated history of working in the non-profit organization and for-profit industry. Skilled in Organizations, Citizenship, Property & Casualty Insurance, Real Estate, Customer Service, and Sales. Gabriela has a Master of Business Administration – MBA focused on Organizational Leadership from the University of Houston-Downtown and a BA degree in Communications from the University of Houston. 

Gabriela is a graduate of the JP Morgan Chase Ascend Program which is designed to help minority contractors in the Greater Houston metro area develop sustainable growth through job creation, and contribute to the post-Hurricane Harvey housing rehabilitation of their neighborhoods.
